DEATH CAN WAIT
I’ve got much better things to do
as long as I can still walk and talk,
breathe on my own and have a brain
that’s still good enough to crank out
more poems and do a day of work,
which my friend, Professor Policastro
insists, is doing the Lord’s work.
I’ll enjoy breakfast in the morning
with Google playing Billie Holliday,
Nina Simone and Louis Armstrong.
Lunch and laughs with hiking friends,
dinner and more with my loving wife.
Hang up your scythe Mr. Death,
before I shake your stony hand
and get my bit of carbon buried
in the ground.
I’ll sleep with one eye open
to make sure I’m still around.
